Oldest Scandinavian Human DNA Revealed Through Chewing Gum

A Way to Trace the Movement, Origin, and Genetics of Ancient People

The results reveal that the individuals whose DNA was discovered have similar genetics to Ice Age Europe’s early Mesolithic populations and other hunter-gatherers in Sweden. The tools found at the site, however, displayed the lithic technology imported from East European Plain to Scandinavia. Earlier studies proposed the idea of genetic and culture into Scandinavia from 2 routes. The ancient mastic lumps provide a link between human genetics and the materials and tools used.

Emrah Kirdok performed the computational examination of the DNA. According to him, demography analysis hints that the genetic composition of individuals who lived in Huseby Klev is more similar to western hunter-gatherers than eastern hunter-gatherer populations.

Per Persson said that the DNA from the mastic lumps has a huge potential for tracking the movement and origin of ancient people and for giving ideas about their food, social relations, and diseases.

According to Anders Gotherstrom, much of the history is evident in the DNA humans carry with them, so they try to find DNA wherever they believe they can find it.
